STEP 5: Create a Concept/Content Web
A Concept/Content Web is a brainstorming tool that identifies, at a glance, the concepts and critical content subtopics that will be addressed during the course of the unit. If you create an overview web for each unit you will teach prior to completing the full unit, it will give you the opportunity to ensure that you have fully integrated all necessary content standards in one or more units and allows you to see the breadth and depth required for instruction.

s you develop the Concept/Content Web, ask yourself the following questions:
  • What are the critical concepts that will be addressed in this unit by strand?
  • What are the critical subtopics that will be addressed in this unit thatthe concepts?
  • Are all of the content standards included in one or more units?
  • Is the unit manageable with the content and concepts identified? (not too much, but enough to allow for in-depth study)

There is more than one acceptable way to perform the task of "webbing" your content and concepts around each strand that will be used in the unit being developed. Two of the most common ways to do the webbing can be seen in the examples below.

In your groups work with your team partners {(Sixth Grade, Seventh Grade and World History) (Eighth Grade, American History I and Civics and Economics)} complete the webbing for your units. As you "web" your unit, each group will brainstorm, dialogue and come up with a list of concepts and facts and topics (critical content) that would be taught in a your unit, under a particular strand. Chart paper will be provided, and following the brainstorming will be a gallery walk to provide feedback to your colleagues.
