UNIT [[#|ONE]] TOPIC: Living with Mother Nature: The Environment and the Development of Civilization

The environment has long played a central role in human existence. This unit will begin to explore the role of the environment in history, exploring the rise of civilizations across time and place and how the environment impacted those civilizations, driving everything from government to trade. At the same time, students will be introduced to patterns of history, beginning to think through particular lenses to understand how history may be read, interpreted, and used. This will prepare students for the next thematic unit, which explores the role that conflict over resources (an element of environment!) and ideology has played in civilization and history.
